Automatic Electric Bikes Explained: Easier Gears, More Enjoyable Rides
Imagine approaching a hill and having your electric bike select an easier gear for you. As the road levels out, it adjusts again, helping you settle into a comfortable pedalling rhythm.
That is the attraction of an automatic electric bike: fewer gear decisions, with more attention available for the route and the enjoyment of riding. You still pedal, steer and brake. The automatic system takes care of choosing a suitable gear within its operating range.
There is now more choice in how this works. Bosch announced an expanded eShift portfolio in June 2025, including TRP systems for trekking and gravel riding. That development is particularly relevant when comparing the 2026 and 2027 bikes now appearing in our range.
What does “automatic” actually mean?
Three features are easily confused when shopping for an e-bike:
- Electronic shifting: a motor moves the gearing when you press a control. It is not necessarily automatic.
- Automatic shifting: the system chooses when to change the gearing for you.
- Stepless gearing: the ratio changes smoothly rather than between numbered gears. It can be manually controlled or automatic.
A belt drive is a separate feature again. It replaces the chain; it does not decide which gear to use.
Why automatic gears can make leisure riding easier
If you enjoy cycling but sometimes find yourself wondering whether to change gear or increase the assistance, an automatic system is worth trying.
It can be particularly appealing on undulating lanes, on journeys with frequent stops, or when returning to cycling after a long break. Instead of repeatedly choosing a gear, you can focus on a steady pedalling rhythm.
This is about personal preference. Some riders enjoy selecting every gear themselves. Others would happily hand that task over, especially on a relaxed ride with friends.
Enviolo AUTOMATiQ: smooth changes around your preferred rhythm
Enviolo AUTOMATiQ uses electronic control to adjust a continuously variable transmission. Rather than stepping through numbered gears, it changes the ratio smoothly to help maintain your chosen cadence — the speed at which you turn the pedals.
You set your preferred rhythm through the supported controls or app, depending on the bike. The system then adjusts as riding conditions change, within the transmission’s range.
This can suit riders who want a calm, simple experience. However, an Enviolo hub alone does not mean the bike has AUTOMATiQ. Many bikes use a manual twist control, so check the exact specification.
TRP automatic shifting: familiar gears with electronic control
TRP takes a different approach. Its compatible automatic systems use a chain, cassette and derailleur, moving between individual gears.
Bosch’s eShift announcement describes automatic, semi-automatic and manual operation for the TRP A10 and A11 systems. The motor and shifting system work together during gear changes.
This is an interesting option if you want automatic convenience in a trekking or mixed-surface bike. Check the fitted system and available settings on the exact model: not every Bosch bike or electronic drivetrain has these functions.
Kalkhoff Endeavour 5 Auto 2027: everyday rides and touring

The Kalkhoff Endeavour 5 Auto 2027 is a good starting point for riders considering automatic shifting for country lanes, cycle paths and longer leisure journeys.
Its specification combines a TRP E.A.S.I. A10 electronic 10-speed system with Bosch Performance Line CX assistance and an 800 Wh battery. Suspension, lights, mudguards and a rear carrier make it a practical proposition for everyday use as well as days out.
The appeal is the complete package: assistance for the hills, automatic gear selection and equipment for carrying what you need. Ask us about the frame style, size and availability that suit you.
Kalkhoff Entice 7+ Advance 2027: comfort for more varied routes

The Kalkhoff Entice 7+ Advance 2027 adds full suspension and a TRP E.A.S.I. A11 11-speed automatic drivetrain, alongside Bosch CX assistance and an 800 Wh battery.
It is worth considering if your days out combine roads with suitable rougher tracks and you place a high value on comfort. Lights, mudguards and a carrier preserve its everyday usefulness.
Choose it because those capabilities match your routes. If most journeys are on smoother surfaces, you may prefer a simpler bike.
Want a belt drive without automatic gears?
That is a perfectly sensible choice too. The Kalkhoff Image 5+ Advance 2027 combines a Gates CDX belt with manually controlled Enviolo Trekking gearing.
You adjust the ratio using a twist control. The belt avoids routine chain lubrication, but the bike still needs normal inspection and servicing. This illustrates why it helps to separate two questions: “Do I want less routine drivetrain care?” and “Do I want the bike to change gear for me?”
Is automatic shifting worth paying more for?
It may be if gear selection is something you would rather not think about, or if trying the system makes riding noticeably more comfortable and enjoyable.
It also adds electronic components, so ask about servicing, setup and support. Automatic shifting does not make every hill effortless, and it cannot extend the available gear range indefinitely. Motor assistance, gearing, rider input, gradient and load still matter.
Nor should you assume it can be added to an existing e-bike with a software update. Compatibility depends on the complete system.
The best comparison is a test ride
Try starting, stopping and riding a gentle slope. Notice whether the pedalling rhythm feels natural, ask how to adjust it, and try any supported manual option. Compare that experience with a good manual bike.
Comfortable frame access, handling and an easy-to-use cockpit remain just as important as the gearing. The right combination is the one that makes you look forward to riding again.
