Virtue Electric Bikes

frequently asked questions

Do all e-bikes come with fitted lights, and how are they powered?

Nearly all of our e-bikes come with integrated front and rear LED lights, powered directly from the bike’s main battery. Because they use efficient LED technology, they draw very little power while providing excellent visibility, day or night.

Do I have to wear a helmet when riding an e-bike?

Under UK law, wearing a helmet is not compulsory. However, we strongly recommend it. E-bike specific helmets are designed to higher safety standards, and many include features such as integrated visors and even indicator systems to improve visibility and safety on the road

How far can an e-bike go on a single charge?

Range depends on several factors including battery size, terrain, rider weight, and level of assistance used. As a general guide, most of our bikes will comfortably achieve between 30–100 miles on a single charge. We’re always happy to advise on the best option based on your typical riding.

How fast do e-bikes go?

In the UK, electric assistance is limited to 15.5mph (25km/h). You can ride faster than this, but the

motor will stop assisting beyond that speed.

Do I need a licence or insurance to ride an e-bike?

No. As long as the bike meets UK regulations, you do not need a licence, insurance, or road tax.

You can ride them just like a normal bicycle.

Are e-bikes heavy?

E-bikes are heavier than standard bicycles due to the motor and battery, but modern designs keep weight well balanced and easy to handle. We stock a range from lightweight models through to more powerful, fully equipped bikes depending on your needs.

Can I ride an e-bike in the rain?

Yes. All of our e-bikes are designed to be used in typical UK weather conditions, including rain. The electrical systems are sealed and weather-resistant. As with any bike, regular cleaning and maintenance will keep it in top condition.

How long does it take to charge the battery?

Most e-bike batteries take between 3–6 hours to fully charge from empty. You don’t need to fully drain the battery before charging — topping up is perfectly fine and often recommended.

How long do e-bike batteries last?

A high-quality e-bike battery is designed to last many years. In real-world use, most batteries have a lifespan of around 10–12 years. They don’t suddenly fail — instead, they gradually lose their ability to hold charge over time. With proper care, you can expect many years of reliable use, although the range will slowly reduce compared to when the battery was new.

Can I test ride an e-bike before buying?

Absolutely — and we encourage it. Choosing the right e-bike is about comfort, fit, and feel. Visit us in-store and we’ll guide you through options and set you up for a proper test ride.

Do you offer servicing and aftercare?

Yes, we provide full workshop support including servicing, diagnostics, and software updates.

Can I finance an e-bike or use Cycle to Work?

Yes — we offer Cycle to Work schemes through a range of providers, as well as flexible payment options including Klarna and PayPal to help spread the cost. Pop into the store or get in touch and we’ll talk you through the best option for you.

What makes Bosch-powered e-bikes better?

Bosch systems are widely regarded as the benchmark for reliability, smooth power delivery, and long-term support. They offer excellent range, strong dealer backup, and regular software updates — making them a great long-term investment.

Can I upgrade things like the display or battery later?

In many cases, yes. Bosch systems in particular allow for upgrades such as larger displays or additional battery options. We can advise on what’s compatible with your bike.
